I have the same problem--I have below-shoulder-length, thick, wavy hair. I borrowed my older sister's Chi once and it was wonderful, but very expensive. I couldn't afford one, so I got a Revlon Perfect Straight straightener. It has 30 heat settings and wide, gold-tone ceramic plates. It works very very well, and sells for $20-$25 at basically any retailer. I got mine at KMart.

I have really thick hair too, my husband just bought me a bedhead straightener. It is pink and has lights on the side that shows you how hot the straightener is. It works awesome. I always use the hottest setting. My best tip for you is just make sure you do it in sections, I always just pull the smallest layer down and throw the rest of my hair up in a pony. Then when I'm done I pull another layer down. Once I have all my hair straightened I flip my head upside and then use the iron on all my hair upside down. I hope this helps yah : )

I use a Babyliss Pro and it works soooo well. My hair is really really curly, and I've found that if you want it to be super straight and actually look like a normal person with straight hair, you should do a blowout first with a hairdryer. It won't be perfect, but it gets the basic curls/waves/knots out so you don't have to deal with that when using the flat iron. Don't forget to put a protectant in your hair so it doesn't fry. I got my flat iron at my hair place, but I think they have them at beauty supply stores. Hope this helps!
