GHD's are used safetly and with confidence in nearly EVERY top name salon in the UK, they would not use a product that could leave them open to millions of pounds of indemnity claims. The current scare mongering is based on a HANDFULL of slight incidents from GHD straighteners produced about 3-4 years ago.

The currrent MK 3 and the soon to be released(january) MK 4 ghd salon stylers are the safest on the market and dont have any the faults people asociate with them.

Most of the time people have been burned have been down to outside factors like large quantities of alchol based hair spray getting used as the straighteners ar applied or old straightenrs that have broke due to everyday wear over two or three years use.

But if you realy do want alternatives to the ghd range, choose a good solid brand from a UK based company, or a company with strong representation in the UK. Fudge make excellent straighteners as do Remington( Wet 2 Straight) , nikki clark and apparently the low priced asda own brand ceramic straighteners are receiving very good reviews.

But again GHD are aabout the best on the market and most of the stories being bandied about them is heresay or exageration.

If you are going to straighten your hair, use a leave-in conditioner or a heat sheild. Blow-drying your hair straight, can prevent most damage, but it takes longer and more skill. If you use a hair straightener, don't hold it on your hair for too long. Sometimes the best people to straighten your hair, are your friends.

Conair has a ceramic one that is known to be good. Ceramic ones are better because they glide on the hair more smoothly and they don't burn, therefore damage the hair.

CHI is the only way to go. It barely damages your hair and works as good as it does the first time, every time. I've had mine for a year and it still hasnt burnt out even though i share it with my three sisters and leave it on for days at a time. It still gets hot in almost a minute and keeps my hair straight all day. You NEED to use product though too, as with any straightner, but you have to choose the right one for your hair. CHI's are pretty pricey, but are worth it.

Conair Infiniti 100% solid ceramic 5 year warranty works great, I have even used the ones from salon's and like the Conair Infiniti better. Also use Dove intense moisture shampoo/conditioner won't weigh the hair down and Biolage ultra hydrating balm and a heat protector spray and some infusium 23 leave in treatment. All of this works for me.

I have Remington Ceramic straightners and they are excellent, not only were they cheap but they work a lot better than my Toni and Guy ones and just as good as some GHD's I've used. They've never burnt my hair they're really good.

Infra Shine. 100% its 100 dollars but woth every penny. it makes ur hair straight and shiny without ruining it. please dont buy cheap straightners. once u lose ur hair its hard to get it back!

I'm not sure you can beat GHD's. I've owned two different makes of hair straighteners but now I have GHD's I can't live without them and would never go back to another make.

GHD are the best, but I have remington wet2straight %26amp; they're also very good.

But if you're worried that getting GHD's will burn your hair, burn your carpet, explode etc, please follow these tips!!!

1. GHD's get very hot, very fast, so the people who have gotten burnt hair have obviously left them on their hair too long, you only need a few seconds!!!!

2. If you're worried about carpet burning then read very carefully GHD'S GET VERY HOT VERY FAST %26amp; IF YOU'RE STUPID ENOUGH TO LEAVE THEM ON YOUR CARPET WHEN THEY'RE STILL HOT THEN YOU DESERVE TO HAVE YOUR CARPET BURNT! BUT IF YOU'RE SMART ENOUGH TO PUT THEM ON STONE ( IF YOU HAVE A FIRE PLACE) OR ANYWHERE THAT WON'T BURN THEN YOUR CARPET WILL NOT BURNT, SOMETIMES PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT CARPETS BURN EASILY %26amp; THAT MOST STRAIGHTNERS COME WITH A COOLING MAT FOR A REASON!!

3. And to finish off, the ones that exploded were from a faulty batch that have been taken off the market %26amp; it was probably mostly due to faulty wiring. My sister has had her GHD's since they first came out %26amp; they've never, ever sparked, or burnt her or anything for her.

4. Also I advise you to put a towel around your neck cause your hair will be very hot after the few seconds you striaghtened it with and it will burn your neck. Also with wet2straight, make sure that when you're straightening wet hair, its not too wet %26amp; make sure you have the holes facing away from you, coz the steam will burn your neck ( that happened to my sister)!!!!
